is an Audio Vector Oscilloscope (Goniometer). It can give you a
detailed picture of the relationships of a stereo signal. This is often
used to watch for mono compatibility of a recording. Unlike a "normal"
oscilloscope the image is rotated by 45° so if you have an
identical signal on both channels you'll see a vertical line. If the
signals are otherwise identical but with opposite phase a horizontal
line is displayed. In a
proper audio recording the major portion of the signal lies within a
±45 range in relation to the vertical axis. If there is a high
portion of low frequency content the picture appears as floating
connected lines whereas with more high frequency content there are
floating points dominant. Mono
compatibility is important in all recordings (not only stereo but also
multichannel). To give you an easy to use tool there is a correlation
graph (phase meter) available (only Gonio3). It displays the cosine of
the phase angle between the two channels. For stereo recordings the
graph normally should lie in the range of "0 - 1". Levels < 0
indicate that there is "out of phase" content in the signal. In
Gonio3 the graph is auto scaled (beginning at -80dB) so that the
picture always occupies the whole area. If you use the meter on
channels with various levels you see the "whole" picture without having
to turn scaling parameter everytime. When a signal goes above 0dB the
display is limited and you will see a high portion of points at the
upper/lower screen. Gonio2
